A slightly larger, more robust sibling to Rossi’s “8626,” the Italian marque’s “8636” bent Apple corresponds to Savinelli’s “636 KS” and features some additional mass lent to its shank and lower bowl. As a result, the proportions fall in line with classic interpretations, presenting an affably plump in-hand presence while the stem’s quarter bend ensures a well-balanced clench. The “8636” isn’t as overtly hearty as Savinelli’s “642” or as trim as the “626,” instead striking an ideal middle ground between the two designs and offering the best of both worlds.

Introduced in 2023, Rossi’s Mezzanotte line is a no-nonsense series that prioritizes timeless traditionalism and a conservative presentation that draws focus to this pipe’s line and form.  It remains balanced between traditional Italian and English pipe making styles — the rustication calling to mind the dramatic, extra-craggy finishes often seen throughout Italian pipe making, but the lighter depth hewing closer to the stately English aesthetic — with the dark palette and grooved surface hiding any handling marks this piece might pick up over the years.

Ferdinando Rossi was one of the pioneers in bringing the production of briar pipes to Italy, a contemporary of Achille Savinelli. And though the two were competitors in business, in their private lives they enjoyed a close friendship. So, it came to be that, just shy of a century after its founding, the Rossi family’s marque came into the care taking of Savinelli, after the former found itself unable to adapt to the changes in the post-WWII tobacconist market. This same old friendship is also one of the reasons why Savinelli has been keen to give the Rossi name new life, as Rossi by Savinelli, focusing on quality, affordable Italian pipes.
