Peterson’s System pipe is one of the Irish marque’s most celebrated and historic innovations, boasting patents dating back to 1890. The System is comprised of three aspects: an army mount, internal condensation reservoir, and the graduated bore P-Lip mouthpiece (though Peterson does offer fishtail versions to accommodate smokers’ preferences). Being the only externally visible of the three components, the military mount allows the pipe to be broken down even while hot, reinforcing the shank. The other two parts, the internal reservoir and graduated bore, are found within the pipe itself — both working in tandem to remove moisture from the smoke. Such a construction requires a slightly different process when cleaning a System pipe, and results in a more flavorful, drier smoke. The System Standard line features a sturdy nickel army mount and is presented here in a dark, walnut stain, offering a tasteful balance between grain definition and the finish’s rustic hue, not unlike that of Peterson’s Ashford finish. The System series is a testament to Peterson’s influence on the pipe industry at large, and its continued popularity over the past 100-plus years bespeaks the company’s reputation for quality.

Since Peterson’s early beginnings, they have viewed their positions in Ireland as a lifelong avocation. In the late 19th century, they began employing and training local Irish men and women, despite other factories hiring French artisans from St. Claude, where the briar pipe originated. Peterson pipes are true Irish products, crafted by Irish people, using Irish traditions and techniques they have developed over the past 150 years. Peterson’s silversmiths, renowned worldwide for their meticulous craftsmanship, are all trained in-house through a rigorous four-to-eight-year apprenticeship. And the same goes for all areas of production at Peterson; they uphold their tradition of craftsmanship by passing it on to new generations.

As the oldest continuously operating briar pipe factory in the world, the folks at Peterson have a certain tradition to uphold, a legacy of craftsmanship dating back over 150 years. Whether you’re browsing for your very first pipe or are a seasoned collector in search of a rare gem, know that every pipe in their catalog carries with it that same preservation of tradition. A Peterson pipe isn’t just a utilitarian tool; it’s a piece of history you can carry with you in your travels, a faithful companion to accompany you through all that life offers.
